When we say celebration on a 14th one event might come to mind, and that is Valentines Day. However, surprisingly South Korea has one celebration every 14th of the month.
Of Course, we might expect this type of culture from a country where events and celebrations are always made spacial. In as much as we know, 100th day and 200th day and such are celebrated by most, a 14th-day celebration is also already marked in most of the Koreans’ calendar.
Maybe you are already familiar with Valentine’s day and White day in the culture. But what other celebrations are there on each 14th of the month; we’ll try to discuss it here.
January 14th (DIARY DAY/CANDLE DAY)
In this 14th of the first month of each year, people exchange diaries or we know them as planners. Owners use these diaries to mark down special occasions in the whole year. Some givers leave messages in the diaries dedicated to the person they give them to. This is actually a bit perfect to start the year while wishing a better life to your friends and loved ones.
People also celebrate Candle Day on this day. The same custom is done as people exchange a gift with their friends. This time, however, candles are given to the other party. These are decorative candles and the scented ones. Basically, gifts exchanged on this day are gifts that wish a better year ahead for the people receiving it.
February 14th (Valentines Day)
Valentines Day is, of course, one of the most popular 14th-day celebration. The whole world is always looking forward to Valentine’s day. In South Korea however, there is quite a small twist on how they celebrate this day. On a Valentines Day in Korea, it is only the girls who give out chocolate to their partners. Even single girls can give to their crushes on this day, and confess their feelings to the boy they like. Or maybe just friends or daughters give chocolates to their male friends and fathers or brothers on this day. The bottom point of a valentines day celebration in South Korea is that the girls give chocolates to boys.
And of course, fangirls would never hesitate to give chocolates to their oppas.
March 14th (WHITE DAY)
When Valentines are for girls to give to the boys of their lives, the 14th of the next month is intended for boys to return the favor. The so-called White Day is a day where men give back gifts to their partner or even just boys to give back to girls. As the name white day indicates, mostly given on this day are candies in white colors. Although sometimes, a person can just give something special to a girl like maybe a kiss?
With that, let’s take a time to see Taeyang giving one of his celebrity-fan, IU, a hug on White Day.
April 14th (BLACK DAY)
Now we know Valentines Day and White Day and what customs they have in South Korea. So we might need to know what 14th-day celebration April has. Korean people know April 14th as Black Day. In this day, restaurant owners who sell jjajangmyeon are pretty much delighted. This is because in these days single people or people out of love would go out and eat Jajangmyun. Jajangmyun is a black colored noodle dish served in restaurants. So on this day, lonely people would comfort themselves over a bowl of this noodle. On another note, though, some would celebrate this day for their independence. Had they a good break up maybe?
May 14th (ROSE DAY / YELLOW DAY)
Again this 14th-day celebration is intended for couples to celebrate. Usually, couples would wear yellow clothes on this day and exchange roses with each other. Or maybe give yellow colored roses. They would then usually go out on a date in a place full of roses. Yes, another day to show their love for each other.
On the other hand, single people would go out and have a yellow colored dish we know as curry. A little spice in their lives would be nice right? And yes, they all hope to spend the next year’s Rose day and Yellow day with someone.
June 14th (KISS DAY)
From the name itself, I think you already know what this day means; right? June 14th is Kiss day. That is a day where couples gift each other with a kiss. And some people even take this day an opportunity to receive a kiss from the person they like. Hmm seems like a good excuse to get a kiss from your crush.
July 14th (SILVER DAY)
In Silver day, most couples would gift each other of that one silver thing to promise their love to each other. What I am meaning is a ring. The people in a relationship usually exchange couple rings on this day. And on a more serious level, most men take this day as a perfect timing for a proposal.
August 14th (GREEN DAY)
Well, couples have all the opportunities to go out on a date in South Korea. Again, Green Day is a day for couples to find an excuse to go out and have a date with nature. Yes, green is equal to nature. Most of the time couples would go hiking or camping or just go on a picnic in the park. On contrary, singles or the broken hearted would go out on a drink over a bottle of soju. Yes, it’s that liquor inside a green bottle.
September 14th (PHOTO DAY)
Yes, we all know South Koreans are mostly the selfie lovers and Instagram users. Such kind of love for photos is given a specific special day in the calendar. This 14th of the month is where people would go out and take a lot more photos than usual. Photo booths are really popular on this day. And yes, couples would surely love to take some sweet photos on this day.
October 14th (WINE DAY)
As simple as the label says, This day is a day where people find an excuse to indulge in a tasty bottle of wine. Couples usually celebrate Wine Day with a romantic Wine date whereas singles drink wine to wash away their sorrow, But this time it’s the wine that they are having.
November 14th (MOVIE DAY / ORANGE DAY)
As the name suggests, this day is a seriously busy day for movie theaters; I believe. It is a day where people go out with their partners, or friends, or family to catch a good movie. A movie room is also available on an occasion the theater is jam-packed during this day. However the movie rooms have limited movies and some are the old ones; considering they only play movies via DVD.
As much as the movie is important, the color orange is an important thing on this day also. So what people do is to bring orange colored food and drink with them as they watch a movie.
December 14th (HUG DAY)
I would personally love this day if I were living in South Korea. A person is entitled to receive and give out a hug on hug day. As the last 14th-day celebration of the year comes, it is great to give out a hug to your friends and family. It is like telling them they did great during the whole year that has passed.
It might be somewhat weird to uphold each 14th-day celebration while you are in South Korea, It is, however, fun to at least try to celebrate a number of them. Don’t even worry if you are in no relationship with someone. These things are also as perfectly celebrated with your best friends and your family.
So what 14th of the month celebration are you doing this year?
